Habits are the foundation of our everyday lives. We build our daily practices, and eventually, our habits and routines shape us.

We either build good habits that support us as we move toward our goals or bad ones that undermine our ability to achieve and succeed. One thing is for certain: it’s going to be difficult to reach your dreams if you are living with a slew of bad habits.

There’s no such thing as an overnight success. All the successful people you admire achieved their success by making daily choices. Some of those choices are extraordinary, but most of them are simple habits that add up, one step, one day at a time.

People think success is external. They assume people who are successful worked hard to make more money but that’s only half of the story.

One of the reasons we develop many bad habits in the first place is because they make us feel good.

Here are destructive habits that may be holding you back from your ultimate success.

Comparing yourself to others

The worst thing you can do to yourself is to compare yourself and where your business is at with in relation to someone else’s. Just because one person believes they are successful, because they have reached a certain stage, doesn’t mean that should be the yardstick for you as well.

Looking at others and always knocking yourself down because you haven’t achieved what they have or own what they own is unnecessary. You have your divine right to create the kind of success that you have worked for.

Putting yourself (or others) down.

If you constantly engage in negative self-talk or putting others down, you are only inviting negativity into your life. Telling yourself “you’re stupid” or “you can’t do anything right” is inflicting wounds that will hold you back. Similarly, when you do it to others, you drag everyone down. 

Stop the harsh put-downs. Tell your inner critic to take a hike. Even better, replace these negative habits with positive ones. Focus not on what went wrong but on what you’re proud of. Find the good in those around you. Look for ways to bring yourself and everyone else up.

You may be great at doing a certain thing, but no matter how good you are, you have weaknesses, and if you don’t work on them you will fall behind.  you’ll find that those that are super successful do not sit around and revel in their accomplishments, they are always figuring out how they can do more and continue excelling.

How you deal with doubt will be what pushes you towards or away from success. If you’re not successful yet, you’re spending more time doubting yourself than believing in yourself. Doubts fuel fear and fear keeps us stagnant.

Waiting for Right time

How many times have you said, “I’m just going to wait until I have enough money saved up,” or “I need to research more.”  If you live true to your values then every moment should be acted on within the best of your interests. Every second of each day, you have total control of each moment so aim to make each one fit right with you.

There never really is a right moment, so waiting around for one is pretty much a waste of your time You have to pick your moment – the one that suits the direction you want to go in right here, right now. 

Being consumed by failure

Don’t let failure weigh you down. Instead, wear it like a badge of honor. You took a risk and it didn’t work out. It’s an awful feeling, but you should recognize that you aren’t alone. No one succeeds without failing sometimes. Assess what went wrong. Learn the lessons you need to learn so you can move forward and make better decisions next time.

 The need to always be perfect

Striving for perfection is almost a form of self-harm.  It’s like being that dog in the cartoons chasing its tail. It’ll never happen because perfection doesn’t exist. Think about it: when is anything ever perfect? Life is always yin and yang so you have to accept that striving for perfection can be damaging to your success.

It brings with it unhappiness as there is always ‘something else to do’ when at times it’s better to be proud of your achievements thus far.
